St. Mary's Centennial Celebration
Time & Location
Fr. Isaac Neal Dodd was a pastor with a mission: to help those in the burgeoning film industry in the silent movie era of Hollywood. He moved out from Des Moines, Iowa to help those searching for guidance.
His first stop?
A small storefront on N Vermont was the first home of St. Mary's. The parish moved twice more, finally resting at its current location, 4510 Finley Avenue in Los Feliz Village, a small community in the larger Hollywood area.
But that didn't keep him from helping whomever he could. His reach extended into the film industry, being called multiple times as a technical advisor off screen or as a pastor/priest on screen. It was the work he did for the Hollywood film community and for the Lord that helped him to be able to one day secure the current location of St. Mary's as we know it today.
He also helped to found the Motion Picture Relief Fund with Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and Charlie Chaplin among other Hollywood notables, a relief fund that still exists to this day and helps actors in all their needs.
