PROGRAM ON THE HOLY SHROUD OF TURIN TO BE OFFERED AT ST MARY OF THE ANGELS IN MARCH

As part of the Lenten program, St Mary of the Angels invites you to a three-part series on the Holy Shroud of Turin. This curious artifact has been subjected to more scientific scrutiny than any other artifact in history. Opinions are still mixed. What’s the story?

Fr Kelley, Rector of St Mary’s, was an invited member of the Second International Scientific Congress on the Shroud. He has a vast collection of photos that explore this subject from scientific and historical perspectives.

  • On Sunday, March 7, he will explore “What Does the Shroud Have to Say for Itself?” This will take place after the 10am Solemn Mass and parish lunch. Starting time will be approximately 12:30pm. This program will run about an hour in length. It will consider the ways in which the image does and does not compare with the evidence of the New Testament record.
  • On Sunday, March 14, Rose Sunday, the second segment will be “The Evidence from Art History & the Shroud – The Case for an Unbroken Thread?” The same schedule will be followed. The program will run a little over an hour. Did the Image on the Cloth make an impression on the history of Christian art? If so, what was it?
  • On Sunday, March 21, the third segment will be “Modern Scientific Examination of the Shroud.” The same schedule will be followed. Dozens of scientific disciplines have taken part in the study of the Shroud. What have these contributed to our knowledge, and what are the legitimate conclusions that can be drawn? The program will run a little over an hour. There will be time for questions.

All are welcome. The church is located at 4510 Finley Avenue in Los Feliz Village, beside the Citibank on Hillhurst.

SEPHARDIC-STYLE SEDER to be CONDUCTED AT ST MARY of the ANGELS

On Monday evening, March 29, the Passover will be celebrated around the world. It commemorates the night when the Hebrews were released from slavery in Egypt, in the time of Moses, and much more. It was in such a celebration that, on Thursday, April 2, 33 AD, Jesus of Nazareth established the Christian rites in Jerusalem, the night before His Crucifixion. Many want to know what those rites were like.

Fr Jonathan Bar-On, born and raised in a Jewish home, for years a resident of Israel, and member of the IDF, now a priest of the Anglican Church in Phoenix, will come to Hollywood to conduct the Seder.

Tickets will be on sale shortly through the Parish Office. Interested people should call (323) 660-2700.

The Seder formally begins at sundown on the night of the Spring full moon, the 14th of Nisan, by the Jewish calendar.

About Saint Mary's

For ninety years, St. Mary's has lived in the midst of Hollywood, proclaiming the Catholic Faith and expressing that faith in the best traditions of Anglicanism. To continue our mission we've established this website. Through it we hope to both share the Faith with our visitors and entice those of you living in Los Angeles to join us for Mass - and maybe then for life!

The Catholic Faith is joyful to its core and part of that joy is sheer fun.  At St. Mary's, holy water is liberally splashed, incense clouds the church, and our voices are loud in the praise of the Three-in-One. The stately procession which begins the Solemn High Mass draws less attention from the congregation than does the uneven line of stomping toddlers who join us at the altar rail for a blessing. Yet those same people who "belt out" the hymns on Sunday quietly offer the Eternal Sacrifice with the priest in the chapel on weekdays when the whisper of the Mass is almost inaudible.

The joy is not in the noise (or lack of it), in the incense, or in the water.  We are joyful and revel in our worship because of the One Who Is Present.

As you journey through our website, I hope that's what you see. If it is, we have succeeded. And we hope you'll join us at St. Mary's and share in that joyful Presence with us.
