The Cross-Planting at Corona del Mar Beach, April 29, 2007--
the four-hundredth anniversary of the planting and Evensong at Cape Henry
by the Jamestown settlers.

The wondrous cross is surveyed.

High and lifted up

Note the backwards inscription. As Fr Kelley explains, "Yes, the
Greek and Latin inscriptions are written right-to-left; the image is not flipped.
The very able scholar of antiquities, the late Prof. Deacon (Anglican in Germany!) Carsten Peter Thiede, analyzed the fragment of the original which remains at
Santa Croce in Rome (site of St Helena’s palace). The remains show the script
all in Hebrew direction. The amazing thing is that the Hebrew comes in four
word-clusters, and the initials are the Sacred Tetragrammaton, YHVH.
No wonder the Jerusalem priests protested to Pilate!

Inscription closeup

Thiede is convinced that the Jewish man working for Pilate was one who was already convinced that Jesus was indeed the Messiah! (Imagine coming to work that morning and being assigned to inscribe His death notice.) I used this as a teaching moment for everyone who was there for its raising."

Securing the base...

Tamp it down solid.
The crosses were afterwards taken to the parochial churchyards as a reminder of the original occasion and its re-affirmation.

Anglicans have nuns, too.
